The Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area provides students with knowledge, skills and behaviours to enable them to enhance and maintain their physical, mental, social and emotional health. This learning area focuses on the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity in the lives of individuals and groups in our society.
There are two strands in the learning area of HPE – personal, social and community health; and movement and physical activity.
HPE has a strong foundation in the sciences that inform what we understand about healthy, safe and active choices.
Students develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self, and build and manage satisfying relationships.
The other focus area is the acquisition of movement skills, concepts and strategies to enable students to confidently, competently and creatively participate in a range of physical activities.
The specific topics covering health may be taught in classrooms or as part of the Physical Education specialist program. The learning may also occur when students take part in programs such as Life Education which covers aspects of Health and Wellbeing.
Other community groups may also be invited to work with the students on various topics, eg Dental Health, Healthy Eating and groups that focus on healthy physical activities.
